The Monkey Problem

The following is the famous monkey problem that has shown up in various magazines from time to time. You need a good working knowledge of algebra fundamentals to solve it.

A rope over the top of a fence has the same length on each side and weighs one-third of a pound per foot. On one end of the rope hangs a monkey holding a banana, and on the other end a weight equal to the weight of the monkey. The banana weighs 2 ounces per inch. The length of the rope in feet is the same as the age of the monkey, and the weight of the monkey in ounces is as much as the age of the monkey's mother. The combined ages of the monkey and its mother is 30 years. One-half the weight of the monkey plus the weight of the banana is one-fourth the sum of the weights of the rope and the weight. The monkey's mother is one-half as old as the monkey will be when it is three times as old as its mother was when she was one-half as old as the monkey will be when it is as old as its mother will be when she is four times as old as the monkey was when it was twice as old as its mother was when she was one-third as old as the monkey was when it was as old as its mother was when she was three times as old as the monkey was when it was one-fourth as old as its is now. How long is the banana?

MONKEY BREAD

The contents are:

     1 loaf of Frozen bread dough
     1 cup of sugar
     Box of butterscotch or vanilla instant pudding mix
     1 stick of butter
     A dash or two of cinnamon

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Thaw dough and slice like bread, and then cut each slice into 6 pieces. Soften butter to room temperature. Mix all dry ingredients and grease loaf pan. Dip dough chunks in butter and then dip in dry mix. Let chunks rise to top of loaf pan, and then bake in oven for 30-60 minutes. (NOTE: baking time depends on how hot your oven is and how doughy or crusty you like your bread) Don't let cool for very long - run a knife around the edges of the pan and turn upside down onto plate.

MONKEY WIPES

Dear All, here's a homemade recipe for wipes a friend gave me, developed for kids but is great for monkids too!! Save one or two round plastic wipe containers. Cut a roll of "good" paper towels in half with a long sharp bread or serrated edge knife. Pull out the cardboard in the middle (give cardboard to monkey to play with). Stir 2 cups warm water together with 2 tablespoons of baby bath (in yellow plastic jug) and 2 tablespoons of baby lotion (in pink plastic jug, Suave is the cheapest). Place the paper towels in the container and let soak. Pull wet towels from middle of roll (they will not pull out of the slotted top very well). TA-DA! Cheap monkey butt wipes (good for hands too) and they smell good too!

DID HE GO APE??

A lieutenant and a monkey were sent up together in a space capsule. Each had a phone beside his chair. After a few minutes, the monkey's phone rang. The monkey listened to a few instructions and carried them out carefully. The same thing happened about every ten minutes, and the lieutenant began to worry because his phone hadn't even rung once. Finally, after about six hours, it rang and the relieved astronaut lunged for the phone, answering in his most professional and military-sounding voice. The message he heard was short and sweet: "Lieutenant, feed the monkey."

Monkey Problem Answer

banana 2oz/in
rope 0.33 lb/ft = 0.44 oz/in

let: Ay = age of baby monkey
Am = age of mother monkey

known relationships:
W =M
|LR| = |Ay|
|M| = |Am|
Ay + Am = 30
(1/2)(M)+B = (1/4)(R + W)

solution:
Am = (1/2)(3)(1/2)(4)(2)(1/3)(3)(1/4)(Ay)
Am = (1.5)Ay > Ay = (2/3)Am
(2/3)Am + Am = 30

Am = 18 the age of the mother
Ay = 12 the age of the baby

then:
M = 18 oz the wt. of the monkey
LR = 12 ft. length of rope
(1/2)(18) + B = (1/4)(64 + 18)
B = 20.5 - 9 = 11.5 oz wt. of banana

LB = 11.5/2 = 5.75 inches long - length of banana
