Agression can be more of a problem around maturity at 4-5 yrs. old. My female cap. was spaded at 5 and it did wonders for her personality. She remains very gentle and playful without the mood swings. She is in excellent health. Check with your vet about the right age for neutering.

I wanted to ask why you were getting a caphuchin monkey in the first place?
I went to school for training and careing for animals they are not a pet kind of animal.
Aggression in all monkeys is very normal, it stems from them wanting to be the top ranking monkey in the troop.
You and the male capuchin will hit a point where things probably have to be fought out, blood will probably be drawn and it will probably be yours. Male capuchins are very different then females there will be a fight. Watch those canine teeth they can do alot of damage. When the fight happens you cannot give in or the relationship will never be the same. He will end up being the top monkey between the two of you.

first i already purchased him and will care for him for life.I also understand aggression is natural.the reason i deciided on a capuchin is its intellegence level. i have been planning on purchaseing a primate for about 5 years now,and done research through out that time.I also decided on a capuchin because it was a new world monkey (no known desiese hove been know to infect humans in new world species accordind to C.D.C.)And as for other new world monkeys squirles from what i read stress out really easey, marmosets and tamerins are very suseptibe to temp below 60 degrees(also from what i read)I have raised exotics for about 8 year.(except for primates)This is new to me.it has also been a dream of mine.My main reason for exotics and know primates ;comes from my belief that alot of these animals are on endanged list or close to becomeing endangered because of us .Deforestation ,puoching and many other different reasons .A lot of animals or still in existence because of people whodo raise them in captivity.I'm not saying this is a perfect life but it has saved a lot of animals. For example i raise pheasants from around the world.there is a species called the edwards pheasant,in captivity it is in great numbers but in the wild in is extinct.this species is from vietnam.Captivity saved it .this little male capuchin i purchased is going to be my first primate and my teacher on owning a primate and thier habits .i was only trying to find out what has worked for other to keep thier aggression to a minimal level.he will get all the attintion he wants .he is not going to be a put in the cage animal and forgoten about. But from my reaserch i have found that because of thier intellegence level they can learn obedience .Example is helping hands.I'm not a trainer but i do want to learn how to control my capuchin to not to bite. and if i fail i will still live with it.I just need advice from people how have the hands on experience with these beautiful animals.

Yes neutering does work. My female cap is VERY intellegent and has not shown any signs of aggression since spading. She is just a delightful companion. I've talked to other monkey owners who have neutered with good results. If you just want to raise breeding monkeys then you'll have to deal with the aggression.I bet if you were to get in touch with Helping Hands you'd find out all of theirs are spayed or neutered. I have a female squirrel monk thats 20 yrs. old. She has always been very mellow and adapted easily to any new situation,i.e. travel, etc. She loves our cat and other kids or adults. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have been raising monkeys for over 20 years and although many monkey moms will disagree with me, it was the easiest when i had only 1 monk. I have raised a capuchin since he was an infant and I believe that a close bond is formed if you sleep with him. My youngest is 2 years old little boy and he is such a love. I have never spanked him for any of his behavior and he does not bite any one. He is still young and has all of his first teeth, but if there comes a time when he becomes very agressive I will get him a mate. I also have 3 Macaques and they are equally intelligent! I cherish all of them! They are all so unique! My first monkey died in 1998 and I slept with her and my male Macaque and I had total trust with them. I was forced to put them into a cage after relocation from Micronesia to Hawaii and I believe this triggors aggression. I kept them on leashes prior to living here. With long runner cables and waist belts.
My little Cap boy gets along with the Macaques and they love to play together. If you must keep them in a cage, then I think it is best that you have another monkey and build the biggest enclosure you can afford. I go to garage sale s and get stimulating durable toys! They seem to be very happy and I can still handle all my monk kids! Hope this info helps. I have been bitten many times by the Macaques but I got them as juveniles and they prefer to sleep with eachother. Smother your baby boy with love and kisses! Groom him and he will know you are his life time Mom!

Aggression can be controlled to a point, at least until maturity. After that, some say that if you have had them neutered, it will help, others say it has made no difference. In reality, it depends on your monkey and HIS personality. Upon maturity, you WILL encounter fights over dominance at some point. It is a very natural instinct and you can not over-ride it. At that point, you will have to make a choice to withdraw or fight it out. If you choose to fight it out, you must end up the victor, usually by pinning your monkey until he submits to you. At that point, the fight is over and you are still the alpha of his troop. If you withdraw or lose, your monkey will be alpha over you from that point, and will probably not be handleable any longer due to how unpredictable he will become. If you do win, you will be challenged again down the road. Yes, you WILL be hurt in those fights, sometimes seriously. Removal of canines makes injuries somewhat less serious, but even with total tooth extraction (not recommended), monkeys can do pretty good damage.
All new world monkeys are effected by low temps. They are from tropical climates. They can be acclimated to lower temps, but all of them must be kept in a warm environment as infants and juveniles especially. If you are going to keep any of them outdoors in cold temps, they will need a heat supply of some type, at least to their sleeping area. If they are not leaving that heated area on their own, you should also feed them there rather than forcing them out into the cold. If the cold is not bothering them to much, they will willingly be coming out to play periodically on their own and you can feed them outside ok then. If you are keeping them outside in cold temps, watch them carefully for signs of illness caused by the cold weather....colds, pneumonia, etc.
Hope this helps.

Do you neuter them when they started to get agressive? I am going to get a capuchin in a few years and I'm learning all that I can about them. I am very interested in getting a female white throated capuchin. For a few months I have been researching both squirrel monkeys and capuchins and I have decided on capuchins. The reason I can't get one now is because of school and I'm there from 8:00-2:50 and that is WAAAAAAAY too long to be away from my baby and that wouldn't be fair to her. Then I know she would really get agressive. I know of many capuchin breeders and I just now found one in my state that sells them for $4000 (is that good for a capuchin? since I know they are usually $5000). I haven't talked to them but I know someone who has and I emailed them asking them about them. It will be a while before I will be able to own my own capuchin because I am only 13 years old. I know that is too young to be owning a monkey mostly because of school. I have a friend that is 15 and will be turning 16 next year and is getting her first monkey next year. Hers will be a Squirrel Monkey. She is where I mostly got my information....she even has her own website about the care of monkeys. I know she is DEFINETLY ready to own her own monkey. But anyways, I guess I will have to wait until I get out of school or even better - home school. That is what my friend is doing. Once she gets her monkey she will be home schooled. That is what I want to do. I was just doing this just to see how long it would take but I was seeing soemthing. That, if I got just $10 a week, how long would it take me to reach $5000. 9 years. But, if I get one from the breeder in my state. I'll only have to get $4000. I'm going to try to get some type of summer job(s) to get MORE money and ask to get MORE allowance money if I do MORE chores. I haven't done chores in a long time so I only have $97 right now. I have a long way to go :-) Well, sorry this was so long but I just had to write this down to tell everyone what I'm going to do.
My name is Keshia and I live in Oklahoma if you would like to talk about capuchins or monkeys in general email me at Khorseofcourse@aol.com or if you have AOL IMs then IM me at Khorseofcourse. Bye!!
