Comments On: Weight of an adult baboon in the wild

From: Ryan on 10/30/00

A friend of mine had been to South Africa a while back and had seen a babbon in the wild. I don't consider them to be that heavy in body weight but would like to know if anyone could tell me what the average weight of an adult baboon in the wild would be ? Would really help if you could give me the figures in kilograms.

Cheers

hi. there is a bit of sexual dimorphism between males and females and weight does tend to be subspecific. but here are some mean figures for you in kg for each of the subspecies of baboon, first the female then the male.

Papio hamadryas anubis: 14.744, 28.414
P. hamadryas cynocephalis: 12.300, 24.893
P. hamadryas hamadryas: 12.000, 21.300
P. hamadryas papio: 17.596 (little sexual dimorphism)
P. hamadryas ursinus: 16.800, 20.400
Thereopithecus gelada: 11.700, 20.000

i hope all of this was of some aid to you.
