Comments On: Macaque Talent Quest

From: James Haile on 10/01/00

Hi!

I am an Assistant Producer with Natural History New Zealand Ltd., a company that makes documentary films and am currently working on a film for National Geographic. This documentary will look at macaques around the world, and explore our various relationships with them. One of the relationships that I am trying to get more information on is macaques as pets, and I wondered if anyone out there might answer a few questions, or if not, put me in touch with someone else who might be able to help.

I am looking for a macaque owner, preferably in California Western United States, who would be happy to appear on television talking about how wonderful it is to have a macaque as a pet. I would also be interested in hearing from someone what has had bad experiences with macaques.

What species are most commonly kept? Do they make good pets? Is it best to have one animal, or more than one? Which sex is best? How do they interact with other pets? Do you know of any horror stories of people who have/keep macaques or of stories of macaques saving people/changing their lives?

Finally, does anyone know if macaques are used by people with disabilities to help them in their daily lives?

I would apprecitate any help or information.

Many thanks,

James

Hello My Name is Dale Young and i have three Java Macaques. One Three year old Female, One three and a half year old Male and a Three month old male.
I am willing to talk to you about the good and bad of haveing macaques as pets. I have experienced both. I got my first monkey when i was sixteen and didn't really know what i was getting into. I now know that it is definately not a good idea to keep these very intelligent animals by them selves for an extended period of time. They are much happier interacting with other monkeys then there human caretakers, still all the monkeys do come out of there cages at least every other day to spend time with me and i do enjoy this time. I have had death scares, macaque attacks, Happy nights, not so happy nights, training go well and i have had training backfire. So if you would like to know more Email me and we can figure something out. I live in New York but if i can do something to help inform people on the truth about older monkeys as pets i would be glad to help.
