Comments On: Monkies are very mean!
From: Brad on 10/01/00
Yes, monkies appear to be very mean. I was reading through what other owners had to say, and that seems to be the case. My question is, why do monkies bite so much? Going on what this and other sites has to say,not only do they bite when the feel threatened, but it they actually go out of there way to bite someone! And if that isn't enough, their bite is very painful and causes serious injury. Isn't that a frightening pet to own at times? What about the liability? God forbid your monkey bites a small child. I was seriously considering a monkey before reading the various posts here, but now I don't know what I was thinking. I assumed it would be like owning a cat with alot of energy. Oh well, knowledge is power.

From: Ben Jean on 10/01/00Not all monkies are mean!! You have been around the wrong ones. And maybe they are mean because you are aggrivating them and you dont even realize it!! I work at a primate facility and they are some of the most intelligent creatures around. And even if some monkies are mean.....so what.....some humans are mean too. That human nature to be aggressive. Look in the mirror...your part monkey! I have a Rhesus female, her name is sophie and she is just like my child. Before you make a decision/oppinion on something like that....PLEASE, look into them...know what ticks them off and visit a nice monkey.

From: Beth on 10/03/00An intelligent answer to that question would be simply to state that they are NOT domesticated, nor will they ever be. Their intelligence is far supperior for mere domination by a human. It is not that monkeys are mean per say, it is simply that primates are high on their own evolutionary social ladders and attack to show or attempt to show dominance. Some bite due to past/present abuse, others may be due to lack of social interaction or species relative companionship. And some is due to the fact of not being able to live out thier ability to mate and reproduce. Imagine only living with another species different from your own and having sexual desires, but are able to not act on them. Agressiveness will and does ensue.
Just remember that they will and do bite for various reasons, plain and simple, and THAT is why people need to think long and hard before getting one.

Beth, It is clear that you do not know very much about primates and they must know too much about you. If all monkeys are mean to you, you must not, only, look frightening, but you smell toxic, too. We are all fortunate you have enough sense to have come to the conclusion that a monkey is not for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My lemur, named the "Incredible Mr. Phelps" has
recently become very anti-social.
When my wife Audrey and I cuddle on the coach in front of
the TV, Mr. Phelphs has developed the disturbing habit of
swinging from the chandelier and hurling his feces at the TV.
((As you can imagine, one finds this quite distressing,
not to mention quite messy.))
This unusual behavior is not seeemingly related to the
programming that is on the TV, nor any other obvious
situational variable that we can surmise at this point.
We have also encountered this disturbing anti-social
behavior extended to strangers. My Phelps has started
to rub feces into the hair of visitors, removing their
hats, if necessary.
Can anyone offer assistance with this distressing development?

From: Walter on 01/17/01Mr. Holsten:
My name is Walt Jaworski and I need your help.
I saw the letter that you wrote on the
MonkeyMaddness page.
My chimp is named Lester and he lives with me in my
house in Wheeling, W.Va. I always wanted to buy a
monkey, but my wife didnt want me to have one
in the house. She said that monkeys were dirty
animals.
She left me and I was lonely so I bought Lester from a
relative who owned him for a few years. I like Lester
because he looks like a human and is really funny.
Sometimes he makes me laugh real hard. Dont you agree?
I am not so sure that chimps and lemers are from the
same family but I will ask this question anyway. I
hope that monkeys are all the same. Oh well. I dont
know.
I wanted to know if you had any luck with Mr. Phelps
and the fece problems. I have some of the same
problems that you do. Lester does all kinds of crazy
stuff when I turn on the tv. Most of the time he will
crap in his hand and than throw it at the walls. I
have washed the sofa and wallpaper a few times but the
stains will not come out.
I have tried locking him in another room but I think
the sound is what makes him crazy. He rips up the
room and throws his crap all over the place most
times.
He grabbed my sisters boobs real hard the last time
she came to the house. That was bad because my sister
and my ex wife are friends and talk a lot. She said
that Lester was a pervert monkey. If he dont get
better quick I am going to leave him in a box by the
side of the road. He is a lot like a human so I dont
want to hurt him badly. I want him to be better.
Can I call you at your house?
Thank you
Walter Jaworski

This little monkey came to me in sept. I paid $2,200. for her.
I didn't originally intend to keep her but only rescue her from an abusive environment.
She was believed to be less than a year old.
She was timid and terrified of men when I first got her.
I took her to the vet and he said he believed she had a broken tail.
She had a blood panel. She was checked for tb, aides and numerous
other diseases. It was clear. Ofcourse she wasn't very old then.
She supposidly came from a private breeder.
The lady I bought her from had purchased her from a breeder
that furnished monkeys for parks in NC or Sc supposidly. She would not give
me any birth records or a birthdate on her. I received no paperwork.
She was a very sweet little pet from the day I first got her. Very affectionate, dependant, prissy. Believe it or not she loved dresses from the day I got her. She likes to dress up in flashy jewelry and catch butterflies in the summertime. The lady I purchased her from said at the beginning she luvs dresses. (Her name then was Kada.
I dressed her up the first year. She also loves baby dolls. If you say where's your baby Jelly, she will grab a baby doll and coo and groom it. She prefers beanie babies. She never took much of a liking to men. She got to the point she would climb on them and groom them but not allow them to hold her. She and my husband got off to a bad start from the first day I got her.
The last six month have been horrible for her. My husband and I seperated and I had to leave her in my old house with three of my big dogs. She had little activity, attention or nurturing. When I went to put a leash on her she bit me, she did not want to go back into captivity. I believe the dogs were terrorizing her through the bars.
When she was first placed with them everything was fine. Then gradually she and my mid size dog, a mixed Australian shepherd, starting dueling through the bars. The monkey would pick. Lately I noticed it getting worse. In the summer I take them out in the backyard together. There had never been any problem. Just lately after I put her in their room. I have a room at my house just for the animals.
I fear for her safety now from Apache. Tonight I got her out and she was petrified.
The dogs were running about. She went to the top of my shoulder, her usual safetly zone. She was screeching. I believe she is in a bad emotional state. She needs to be detraumatized. I think she has felt threatened. its making her so stressed. She never bites me. She grabbed my neck and held on with her teeth. She left puncture bites tonight. She bit my breast and broke the skin. My mother says she needs to be with her own kind. I have thought this for a long time. My dad is building a glass building with indoor running water to house my dogs this summer but unfortunately I can't wait that long to switch environments for her. I really fear for her safety.
I am seeking a park or wildlife refuge who will house jelly and offer her safety. I don't know who to trust to provide the best care and long life span for such a young primate. She is a very loving animal. She is nurturing and sweet. Lately because of this recent behavoir I do not trust her. The girl I got her from has a new primate. A boy. He is under a year old. She tells me he is bad, nothing like Jelly. He doesn't seem to have the sweetness she had from birth.
I hate to part with her because we share a special bond. I even dreamt about her when I went to Maui last year. I decided while I was away to try putting outdoors in a pole barn dog run for extra freedom and sunlight, until I returned. I hired my father to take care of her. She got out the first day before my plane even landed in Hawaii. Fortunately she stayed on the property and did not try to venture into the neighborhood nearby(We live on ten acres.).My dad came over every day and gave her a bananna and talked to her. I know this sounds odd but I dreamt about her. I talked to her each day. I kept praying she'd still be here when I got back. Dad said she was hysterical after a lightning storm.
When I got back a week later, She was still there! She'd enjoyed her freedom. I know she really needs to be with her own kind. She has had it rough lately. I would like to find a vervet farm where it would be possible to check on her occassionally or get it in writing before she is ever transferred or sent someplace they get my permission. I fear she will fall in the hands of those governmental experiement places. She really doesn't belong in captivity. I try to teach that no primate does. I only want to know she will never be abused or harmed. I can make donations. I don't want to lose total possession of her unless she will be guarenteed protection and excellent care.
Thank you very much
I want her with her own kind. Not kept as a pet in someones home or used solely for breeding purposes or government research

Some monkies may have a surly disposition when you come into possesssion of them but this can be corrected through firm but loving discipline. I've lost track of the amount of times i've felt the need to spank my monkey...
