Comments On: should chimpanzies be legal to have in the backyards in the US
From: Vernell on 09/07/00
I would like to say that if someone had a chimp, and it was an adult, it would be kept in a cage.
Just like the zoo's/sanctuaries/labratories house them in cages.
If the chimp was in a large enough cage and provided with the necessary food, shelter, environment enrichment, companionship of other chimps, proper veteranairy care, there would be no difference if it was in the back yard of a commited, responsible, private owner or zoo/sanctuary.
If the chimps cage was in the back yard or in the middle of 50 acres, or in a zoo, it would not matter the size of the property owned. They would still be in the same size enclosure/cage.
So my answer would be YES it should be legal.

CHIMPS ARE A WONDERFUL ANIMAL. YOU MUST GIVE THEM LOVE & THEY WILL RETURN THEIR LOVE. THEY ARE A LOT OF HARD WORK & DEDICATION.NO ONE SHOULD HAVE ONE UNLESS THEY HAVE THE PROPER HOUSING&ENRICHMENT PROGRAM. THIS IS LIKE HAVING A CHILD FOR LIFE.THEY ARE NOT LIKE A DOG OR CAT,EVEN THOU THEY ARE CUTE.YES THEY SHOULD BE LEGAL.PA. HAS A NO TOUCH LAW THE GAME COMMISSION INFORMED ME,THIS RULE IS A VERY CRUEL & UNFAIR RULE. THESE CHIMPS NEED TO SOCIALIZE JUST AS A HUMAN! ANYONE INTERESTED IN PURCHASING ONE SHOULD THINK LONG & HARD!!

Yes I think it ok as long as people realize that chimps DO NOT stay cute and cuddly for long! They DO grow up, grow BIG, and are very dangerous animals once they reach just barely a juvenile age. They
need companionship from other chimps as well for a healthy mental
condition. Not many people can afford the living requirements needed
to maintain them. The cost of just 1 chimp alone is $50,000. Now
take into consideration the fact that you will need to purchase at
least 2 chimps, PLUS the costs of vet care, habitat, food, medical-
supplies, so forth...
Personally, I don't agree with chimpanzees being kept as pets b/c of
mere fact that they are highly intelligent, it would be like owning
a slave in some respects. I like to see more money spent on protect-
ing their environvent from destruction, and saving the chimps
themselves. Sanctuaries are already bursting at the seams with chimps
that used to be kept as pets and then given up cruelly when they grew
too large and dangerous to handle.

Chimpanzies should remain in the wild and should on be kept in large social groups by zoos or sanctuarys like monkey world in Dorset!!!!

Chimpanzees should not be able to be kept as pets in a private backyards for mny good reasons, the main one being the developmental needs of infant and juvenile chimps. An infant chimpanzee separated from its mother at an age of 2-3 years old or less will of ten die from what can only be described as severe depression after a sometimes very lengthy (some months) period of pining. Those that do survive typically lack the social skills required to thrive in the complex chimpanzee society. Their growth is often stunted due to their inability to keep up with the troop, resulting in much less time left for feeding. The implications of these symptons is as follows, chimpanzees should not be separated from their mothers until they are socially and emotionally mature (chimps as old as eight years have shown separation anxiety when their mothers have died or been taken from them), once chimps are old enough to no longer require their mothers support they are far too strong physically to be safely kept as a pet animal. Add to this the ongoing need of chimps to be socially stimulated all throughout their life (by other chimps, not by humans, we should not be so arrogant as to think that we can provide an adequate substitution for a complex social life which we cant fully appreciate, the work of Jane Goodall has been invaluable in demonstrating the complexities of pongid life and to her and others like her we should be forever indebted)and it should be easy to see that the proposition of owning a chimp as a pet can only be seen as cruel regardless of how loving and caring the owner may think he or she is. The chimpanzee, like every other creature on the earth, has the right to exist freely both as a species and as an individual. Zoos are a necessary evil because they provide safe havens for animals whose habitats are vanishing and they are important research and educational tools to help conserve the worlds nonhuman populations. Owning wild animals as pets when their needs, both physical and emotional, can't be met, is not necessary, just evil.

It is ludicrous to think that anyone should believe that they can bear rights to a chimpanzee. This is a breathing organism that has been born to a anouther of its species, its rightful carer.
This is not an object to derive personal joy or glorification from, it also is not something that should be reard as a human.
Chimps are endearing because of the little genetic differentation between their species and ours. We should not be humanising them, nor should we be controlling or owning them.
They own themselves, as we own ourselves

Do you have 40+ years to devote to multiple Chimps? Chimps on television are almost always juveniles. When full grown they can become quite dangerous. They should stay in the wild or in Zoos that provide professional staffs, ample enclosures and as natural as possible family units. They are not your cute and cuddly little friends.
